I was sent this cookbook and it was an uncorrected proof copy. The images were black and white and looked like they were taken from the net. The binding was flimsy, as were the pages. It was a really bad job. However, I understand that this is an uncorrected proof copy and I can say that the recipes looked really good, the photos, had they been color and glossy were pleasing as well. I simply can’t rate this any higher without seeing a proper copy.

Naturally I was expecting this book to have scrumptious recipes involving cheese and pasta and olive oil, and I’m not disappointed. But the section on desserts is delightful! Cookies and cake to honey-poached pears, the recipes offer a variety of flavors and textures. I can’t wait to try them.

I like watching Giada on tv. She’s so personable and fun to watch on tv so I had a feeling her cookbook with portray some of that and it does. Her recipes are simple to follow with minimal ingredients and best of all, PICTURES of the food! I am a visual person so this is always important to me in a recipe book.

If you’ve watched Giada on the Food Network, and liked her, then you’ll enjoy this book. Like the recipes she uses on the TV show, they are simple and straightforward and tasty. Whereas chefs like Mario Batali create complex dishes using many, and often unusual, ingredients, these recipes are very much ‘what you see is what you get’.

A pleasant surprise was that while the recipes aren’t at all complex, neither are they, by and large, trivial and expected. For instance, the second one in the book is for Italian Fried Olives, and they are delicious. They are the kind of recipes where you find yourself thinking ‘Hmmm… that sounds interesting…” and you have a pretty good idea what it’ll taste like once you make it. There are surprises: The “Sweet and Savory Bread Pudding” has butternut squash and parsnips and is very lightly sweetened. The squash is straightforward, but I think the parsnips are a little unexpected.

I found the salads and desserts the least involving chapters, as while they seem tasty, they’re not all that unusual. Nonetheless, there are very servicable recipes that are unlikely to go wrong.

Something I found charming is that spread thoughout the book are photos of Giada’s family. While I’d normally find that kind of thing cloying, it works, and they made me smile. And – this is in the uncorrected proof version, which is completely black-and-white other than the cover. I’m sure that the final version will be full of beautiful color photos of both the food and the people.

As a Vine reviewer I didn’t pay for this book, but I may buy a copy for myself and I’ll definitely buy it as a gift.
