Product Description
A comprehensive guide to managing diabetes from the author of The Best Life Diet, complete with a three-phase program, meal plans, and recipes…. More >>

I saw Bob Greene on Good Morning America and ever since, I have looked for every opportunity to speak out against this book. The menu plan featured on GMA was a disaster for anyone with the type of glucose-intolerance that results in chronic high blood sugar readings. The symptom of glucose-intolerance that is called “Type II Diabetes” can be completely avoided with a very low-carbohydrate diet. However, Greene’s menus are very low in fat and too high in carbohydrates. All carbohydrates convert to glucose, which cannot be utilized by those of us with insulin-resistance/glucose intolerance. Anyone with elevated fasting blood sugars or a family history of “Type II” needs to cut out all starches, grains and sugars. Exercise is also crucial – a minimum of 30 minutes of high intensity exercise (not a stroll around the neighborhood) every day. These two simple steps will prevent “Type II Diabetes” and the accompanying obesity, heart, and circulation problems – no pharmaceuticals required. Run, don’t walk away from Greene’s book and check out Dr. Richard Bernstein and Gary Taubes. They have researched the science, which apparently Bob Greene has not.

I was excited about getting this book Bob Greene is awesome and seems to have such sound advice whenever I have seen him on TV.
But when I got the book I saw foods I should never eat…
A long time ago I believe it was Dr Atkins the word “pre-diabetes” was coined If you can catch yourself in this situation you have a real opportunity to set yourself on the right track
Those of us with glucose intolerance issues have trouble processing sugar or anything that turns into sugar..therefore we have to be very careful about our food choices
(Here is a good example of this) I went on a famous diet program where they deliver the food to your door…I chose the diabetic program and in 3 months on the program I did not lose a pound I followed the program and did not cheat, but you see I later learned that bread, fruit, etc turns into sugar in the body and I had a problem with the sugar
I believe Bob Greene is well intentioned but off the mark It might also be good for people who are taking medicine to lower their blood sugar
I was hoping that he had come up with phase 2 of glycose intolerant people…maybe something new
to help us prevent diabetes, but to those of us with these issues, this book could actually harm instead of help us

This book should be the bible for diabetic. It tells how to manage and live with diabetes. It also talks about those who have diabetes and are trying to make a difference for their community and to help find a cure. The one that comes to mind is Chipapalooza ([...]) It is a charity concert series that gives its profits to help end diabetes! This book is an inspiration!!!

My wife has T2 diabetes and we have done some research and mostly followed the rules of our doctor and nutritionist when planning our lifestyle with diabetes. When I picked this book up I spent time researching other reviews and authors so I was not going into a critical topic for so many people completely blind. What I found were many different reviews, some raving, others highly critical. The most well thought out and educated reviews tended to be critical. Our own doctor had only heard of the author in passing and did not recommend him. I entered into the text then with a grain of salt but wanting to give it a fair shake.
For the most part this book taught us what our doctor taught us about exercise and diet, though some of the numbers did not match up. For instance, our doctor wants my wife’s blood sugar to be 100-110 one hour after eating. The text says a much higher number is acceptable. Other educated reviewers have suggested that this number is not in line with current standards either.
His recommendations to slowly increase physical activity (and thereby making a plan you are more likely to stick with are reasonable and well thought out. Suggestions on how to watch carb intake as well as sugar intake are in line with what our doctor tells us, and his various examples of meal plans are reasonable – many books on diabetes recommend meal plans that are out of the ordinary of what most people will regularly make and eat as part of their diet – they are either too fancy for every meal, or too expensive. This text is much more reasonable in its approach to creating meal plans and isn’t far off to what we do.
He also strongly urges patients with diabetes to carefully track and monitor their sugar levels according to their doctors instructions which is a sound recommendation.
Overall, this is okay as a companion book, but there are better texts out there, and never trust in a book over what your doctor tells you to do.

I find this book to be extremely helpful with so much information that is meant to help those suffering from diabetes or those, like me, who are pre-diabetic and trying to avoid the disease. I will be using this book like a information encyclopedia for my fight against diabetes. I like that the book doesn’t talk down to the reader but also doesn’t explain things in such lofty medical terminology that the reader is left with more questions than answers. Highly Recommended.
